I-Hotel Manilatown Center, 868 Kearny Street, San Francisco, CA
50 years ago the historic 1965 Grape Strike was launched in the Delano Filipino Community Hall by the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) led by Larry Itliong & Philip Vera Cruz. The strike was expanded when the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) led by Chavez & Huerta joined in later merging to form the United Farmworkers, AFL-CIO. Yet, the pivotal role that Filipinos played in this historic event was soon overshadowed by the Chavez faction. Learn the real truth about the purging of the Filipino leadership and the exodus of Filipino workers from the UFW. Understand the real reasons for Chavez’s visit to Manila to embrace Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos and the impact his visit had upon the UFW.
