Call for Artists

Creativist Pinay Crones (March 8, 2014 – July 31, 2014)

Exhibition
Entry Deadline: Sunday, February 16, 2014

The word “Creativist” was coined by Tessie Zaragoza during a gathering of Filipino women who wanted to mount an art exhibit. Creativist in this context refers to Filipino women who, by their mere presence and life experience, are trailblazers, social and/or cultural activists making art in all types of medium. “Pinay” is a woman with Filipino heritage. “Crone” is a word that has various and conflicting meanings both positive and negative. We take the positive connotation of the word that universally recognizes a Crone as wise elder woman. Therefore, “Creativist Pinay Crones” are trailblazing artists of Filipino heritage who have reached and exceeded the age of 55 and want to share their wisdom. This will be the first exhibit of this kind to highlight Pinay Activists over 55 whose creative works have never been shown together. It is our goal for this exhibit to be a reference point for inter-generational dialogue in which wisdom will be passed from Crones to the younger generations.

Open to all Pinay artists 55 years+ residing in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California. We welcome the opportunity to support works that are retrospective in nature, current new works and/or thematic works not previously shared with the general public. We are accepting all media, including crafts, literary, music, and performing arts. The process of creating this exhibit is organic and taking shape as it happens. However, we wish to have a few guidelines that reflects consistency in our decisions. Here are the guidelines:

  1. All artists need to submit a biography and artist statement.
  2. Only emailed entries received by February 16th with digitally uploaded images, literary works, and videos will be accepted. Send all information to creativistpinaycrones2014@gmail.com. If proposing a site-specific installation please include a brief description of concept with supporting images; a visit to International Hotel Manilatown Center gallery prior to entry would be advisable (to schedule an appointment, send email to evelynluluquisen@manilatown.org).
  3. Artists should live, work, and manifest their art in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California. Proximity to the exhibit location makes transporting the artwork manageable.
